Turn Back the Clock - A Deep Dive into Hand Rejuvenation Procedures

Topic: Hand Rejuvenation

Greetings colleagues,

Welcome to the Hands-On The East Bay Newsletter, which summarizes key topics in hand surgery for providers on the front lines. I'm Dr. Jesse Dashe, an orthopedic hand surgeon at the East Bay Hand Medical Center.

What defines Hand Rejuvenation?

Hand rejuvenation is a set of cosmetic procedures aimed at restoring a youthful appearance to the hands, which can often belay the signs of aging even more strikingly than the face.

What are the main causes leading to the need for hand rejuvenation?

-Age-related volume loss leading to more pronounced veins and tendons

-Hyperpigmentation and sunspots from chronic sun exposure

-Thinner, wrinkled skin due to decreased collagen and elastin

What manifestations should we look for?

Pronounced veins and tendons due to volume loss Brown spots and rough texture from sun damage Fine lines and wrinkles from skin aging

What diagnostic measures can be employed?

Subjective clinical assessment is primarily used to evaluate the need for hand rejuvenation. Devices for measuring skin elasticity and hydration can provide more objective data.

What are the key treatment modalities used in hand rejuvenation?

-Dermal fillers, like hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite, to restore volume and smooth wrinkles

-Laser resurfacing or chemical peels to improve skin texture and reduce hyperpigmentation

-Fat grafting for volume restoration and skin rejuvenation
